GREGG COUNTY, TX -- A man who led police on a chase down Interstate 20 in Harrison and Gregg counties in East Texas before abandoning his truck in the median and taking off on foot remained at large today. Tuesday afternoon's chase started in Gregg County when the driver failed to stop for a Texas state trooper trying to pull him over for speeding. LONGVIEW, TX -- A Georgia man who shot and killed himself during a traffic stop in Longview, Texas, over the weekend may have been reluctant to return home to face drunken-driving charges, authorities in Longview said today. Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano said today that an autopsy concluded that Robert John Birkett, 51, of Athens, Ga., died of a self-inflicted wound. A Gregg County deputy had stopped Birkett on Interstate 20 for two traffic violations. Birkett got out of the car, pulled a handgun and shot himself, sheriff's detectives said.... cont...
